Science of Ketamine

Ketamine is a long-established anesthetic, in use for over half a century, and has grown to include applications beyond its original medical uses. The medical community is well-versed in its side effects and dosages but continues to explore its evolving benefits in mental health care.

In the last twenty years, ketamine has become a significant alternative treatment for various mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, and suicidality, alcoholism and other disorders. It is particularly effective in severe cases where other treatments have failed.

Ketamine promotes growth in the prefrontal cortex and other brain areas crucial for emotion regulation. It is believed to help form new neural connections and repair damaged ones, thereby paving new pathways that enhance mood, cognitive abilities, and sleep quality.

Ketamine helps modulate glutamate, the most prevalent neurotransmitter in the brain, which is essential for creating and maintaining synapses. It also affects the balance with GABA, another neurotransmitter, crucial for a healthy nervous system. This balance is vital for mental well-being, influencing conditions like anxiety and sleep disorders.

As an NMDA-receptor antagonist, ketamine aids in rebalancing the glutamate system. This leads to an increase in BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor), which is essential for sustaining healthy brain activity. This process is vital for ketamine's antidepressant properties and influences the development of new psychiatric medications.

Prestigious institutions including Yale, Stanford, Harvard, UCLA, USC, NYU, the National Institute of Mental Health, and the Cleveland Clinic have been researching ketamine’s effects on mental health for two decades. Their studies indicate that about 70% of patients who have not benefited from traditional treatments show significant improvement with ketamine therapy.

The ongoing research into ketamine’s multifaceted effects on mental health is opening new possibilities for innovative psychiatric treatments, deepening the understanding of its mechanisms within the scientific community.

There's no denying that life can be stressful. Between work, family, and just the general day-to-day grind, it can be hard to keep your head above water. I was starting to feel like I was drowning in stress when I decided to give New Age Psychiatry a try. And I'm glad I did! I've learned a lot of coping skills that have helped me to deal with stress in a more constructive way. I don't let the little things get to me as much anymore, and I'm better able to manage my time and prioritize my tasks. As a result, I'm much less stressed overall. If you're feeling overwhelmed by stress, you might just find it helpful too!

I had always been the type of person to internalize my problems, and the idea of talking to a stranger about my issues felt unbearable. However, when my anxiety started to affect my work and personal life, I knew that I needed to seek help. And so, reluctantly, I made an appointment with a new age psychiatry. From our very first session, she made me feel comfortable and understood. She helped me to see my anxiety in a new light, and with time provided me with tools to manage my symptoms. I am now able to enjoy social situations without feeling overwhelmed, and I am incredibly grateful to my psych NP for helping me enjoy my life again.
